What is a Fossil?
A fossil is the petrified remains of a once-living organism – be it an animal, a plant, or a microorganism. The term comes from the Latin fossilis, meaning "dug up". Fossils are the most important witnesses to Earth's history: they tell us which creatures populated the Earth millions of years ago, how they lived – and why many of them disappeared.
How Does a Fossil Form?
The formation of a fossil is an extraordinary process that only succeeds under very specific conditions. Most of the living beings that have ever lived on Earth leave no trace – they decompose completely. Only a tiny fraction becomes a fossil.
- Death and Rapid Burial: The animal or plant dies and is quickly covered by sediment. The faster the burial, the better the preservation.
- Mineralization: Over millennia, organic components are replaced by minerals. Bones, teeth, and shells literally turn into stone.
- Rock Formation: The sediment compacts into rock. The fossil is now enclosed – sometimes for hundreds of millions of years.
- Exposure: Erosion, tectonic movements, or human excavations eventually bring the fossil back to light.
What Types of Fossils Are There?
- Body Fossils: The direct remains of an organism – bones, teeth, shells, or soft tissues (e.g., in amber or permafrost).
- Trace Fossils: Indirect evidence of life – footprints, burrows, or fossilized feces (coprolites).
- Chemofossils: Molecular remains like organic compounds that indicate past life.
- Index Fossils: Fossils of specific species that are so characteristic of a geological epoch that they are used to date rock layers – like ammonites.

- The Solnhofen Limestones in Bavaria – known for the famous Archaeopteryx
- The Messel Pit in Hesse – a UNESCO World Heritage site with unique mammalian fossils
- The Hell Creek Formation in the USA – one of the richest dinosaur discovery sites in the world
- The Sahara – once a sea, now full of marine reptiles and fish fossils
