What is petrified wood?

Petrified wood, also known as wood opalization, is formed through a geological process called permineralization. In this process, the organic material of a dead tree is gradually replaced by minerals – usually quartz, chalcedony, or opal – while the original structure of the wood is preserved.

How is petrified wood formed?

The process begins when a tree dies and is covered by sediments – such as volcanic ash, sand, or mud. Without oxygen, the wood cannot rot. Instead, mineral-rich groundwater penetrates the cell structure, replacing the organic material cell by cell with minerals. This process takes thousands to millions of years.

The result: an object that outwardly resembles wood – with visible growth rings, grain, and bark structure – but is entirely composed of stone.

Each piece of petrified wood is unique. The variety of colors – from deep red and orange to yellow, gray, and black – is created by different minerals and trace elements in the soil. Some specimens still show the exact cellular structure of the original tree under a microscope.
