Sarcosuchus: One of the Largest Crocodilians of All Time

Approximately 112 million years ago, during the Early Cretaceous period, a creature roamed the rivers and lakes of what is now Africa that likely struck fear even into large dinosaurs: Sarcosuchus imperator – the "Emperor Flesh Crocodile." With an estimated length of up to 12 meters and a weight potentially reaching 8 tons, it ranks among the most impressive predators to have ever lived on Earth.

Discovery and Research

The first fossils of Sarcosuchus were discovered in the Sahara in the 1960s – a region that was a tropical river delta during the Cretaceous period. The French paleontologist Albert-Félix de Lapparent described the initial finds. However, it wasn't until 2000 that American paleontologist Paul Sereno made a spectacular discovery in Niger: nearly complete skeletons that for the first time allowed for a precise reconstruction of the animal.

Anatomy of a Giant

The skull of Sarcosuchus alone measured up to 1.8 meters – longer than a grown human. Characteristic was a bulbous thickening at the tip of its snout, the so-called Bulla, whose function is still debated today: It may have served for vocalization or olfaction.

In contrast to modern crocodiles, Sarcosuchus apparently grew continuously over decades – growth rings in its osteoderms (bony scales) suggest a lifespan of up to 60 years.

Hunting Behavior and Prey

With over 130 teeth in its upper and lower jaws, Sarcosuchus was an apex predator of its ecosystem. Scientists suspect that it not only hunted fish and aquatic animals but also large dinosaurs that came to the shore to drink – similar to how modern Nile crocodiles prey on large mammals.

Sarcosuchus in Comparison

Was Sarcosuchus truly the largest crocodilian of all time? Scientists are not in agreement. Other giant crocodiles such as Purussaurus brasiliensis from the Miocene of South America or Deinosuchus from the North American Cretaceous reached similar dimensions. What is certain is that Sarcosuchus belongs to the absolute top tier – and thanks to excellent fossil finds, it is the best-researched representative of these giants.
