A Giant of Primeval Times
Around 66 to 82 million years ago, in the late Cretaceous period, one reptile dominated the world's oceans like no other: the Mosasaurus. With a body length of up to 17 meters and an enormous jaw full of sharp teeth, it was the undisputed apex predator of its time.
What was the Mosasaurus?
Contrary to popular belief, the Mosasaurus was not a dinosaur – it belonged to the Mosasaurids, a group of large marine reptiles closely related to modern monitor lizards and snakes. Mosasaurids lived exclusively in water but breathed air and had to surface regularly.
Their bodies were perfectly adapted for life in the sea: a streamlined torso, paddle-shaped limbs, and a powerful, laterally flattened tail fin – similar to modern sharks.
Discovery and Name
The name Mosasaurus is derived from the Latin Mosa (Meuse) – named after the river in the Netherlands, where the first large Mosasaurus skull was found in 1764. This discovery was one of the first scientifically described fossils ever and played an important role in the early history of paleontology.
What did the Mosasaurus eat?
Mosasaurids were opportunistic predators: they hunted fish, ammonites, turtles, seabirds, and even other mosasaurids. Their teeth were conical and slightly curved backward – ideal for holding and swallowing prey. Some species also had a second row of teeth on the palate.
The End of the Mosasaurids
Like the dinosaurs, the mosasaurids disappeared at the end of the Cretaceous period about 66 million years ago – victims of the mass extinction triggered by an asteroid impact. Within a few millennia, the rulers of the primeval oceans were extinct.
Mosasaurid Fossils as Collector's Items
Fossil remains of mosasaurids – especially vertebrae and teeth – are highly sought after by collectors. They often come from Morocco, where Cretaceous marine deposits are rich in well-preserved specimens. Each vertebra tells the story of an animal that roamed the oceans over 70 million years ago.
In our shop, you will find original Mosasaurid vertebrae and teeth – carefully selected and with a certificate of authenticity.
