Imagine this: A lightning bolt strikes – with a temperature of up to 30,000 Kelvin, five times hotter than the surface of the sun. What happens in fractions of a second leaves behind a unique testament to nature: the Fulgurite.

What is a Fulgurite?

Fulgurites (from the Latin fulgur = lightning) form when lightning strikes sandy or silica-rich soil. The extreme heat instantly melts the sand and fuses the quartz grains into a glass-like tube – the fulgurite. This process takes less than a second.

The result is a fragile, branching structure that accurately reflects the exact shape of the lightning channel in the ground. No two fulgurites are alike – each specimen is a unique natural one-of-a-kind.

What do Fulgurites look like?

Fulgurites usually have a tubular, branching shape. The outside is rough and covered with sand grains, while the inside is smooth and glassy – the molten silicon dioxide solidifies there into a type of natural glass. The color varies depending on the mineral composition of the soil: from light grey to beige to dark brown.

Where are Fulgurites found?

Fulgurites are found worldwide – wherever thunderstorms meet sandy soils. Particularly well-known sites include the Sahara, the deserts of North America, and coastal regions with fine quartz sand. Some specimens extend several meters deep into the ground.
