Ammonites: The Fascinating Spirals of Prehistory

Few fossils are as iconic as the curved spiral of the ammonite. For over 400 million years, their petrified shells have lain dormant in rock layers around the globe – and to this day, they tell us of a world long lost.

What are Ammonites?

Ammonites were cephalopods, relatives of today's squids, octopuses, and nautiloids. They lived exclusively in the sea, propelled themselves by jet propulsion, and hunted small prey with tentacle-like arms. Their characteristic spiral-shaped shell was not a protective armor but an ingenious buoyancy system – divided into gas-filled chambers that allowed the animal to float weightlessly in the water.

A Success Story Spanning Millions of Years

Ammonites first appeared in the Devonian period approximately 409 million years ago and survived three of the five major mass extinctions in Earth's history. They evolved into thousands of species with an astonishing variety of shell forms – from tightly coiled spirals to straight or hook-shaped heteromorphs. Only the mass extinction at the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary 66 million years ago – the same event that wiped out the non-avian dinosaurs – ended their reign over the seas.

Why are Ammonites so Important for Science?

Ammonites are what are known as index fossils: their rapid evolution and global distribution make them one of geology's most precise tools. Based on their shells, rock layers can be dated to within a few million years – an invaluable contribution to reconstructing Earth's history.

Ammonites Today

Although the animals themselves have long been extinct, their relatives live on: the nautilus – the namesake of our store – is the last living representative of this ancient lineage of cephalopods. Its shell still follows the same mathematical spiral that ammonites perfected hundreds of millions of years ago.
